You will hear the term “pre-engineered” a lot when you shop for a steel building. But what does it actually mean? In short, a pre-engineered metal building is a custom steel structure that a manufacturer designs for your site, fabricates in a factory and ships ready to assemble.

How a Pre-Engineered Metal Building Works
Every building starts with your requirements. You choose the size, height, roof pitch, doors and windows. Then the manufacturer’s engineers design the frame for the snow, wind and seismic loads at your location.
Next, the factory cuts, welds and punches every steel member to match the design. Finally, the parts arrive on site with drawings that show exactly how they go together. As a result, the crew bolts the building together rather than cutting and welding in the field.
The Main Parts of the Building
Most pre-engineered buildings share the same basic system:
- Primary frames carry the main roof and wall loads to the foundation.
- Secondary framing, including purlins and girts, supports the roof and wall panels.
- Roof and wall panels enclose the building and add strength.
- Bracing resists wind and keeps the frame square.
- Trim, doors and accessories finish the building.
Benefits of a Pre-Engineered Metal Building
Owners choose this type of building for several reasons. First, the engineering fits your site, so the building meets or exceeds the structural load and code requirements of its location. Second, factory fabrication keeps parts accurate and consistent.
In addition, construction often goes faster than with conventional framing. Steel also resists rot, pests and fire, and it needs little maintenance. Finally, clear-span frames create wide, open interiors. Our article on clear-span vs multi-span buildings explains that choice.
Is It a Kit Building?
People sometimes call these buildings “kits,” and manufacturers do ship them as complete packages. However, a quality pre-engineered metal building is not a one-size-fits-all kit. Instead, engineers design each one for a specific site and use.
That difference matters most in places with heavy snow, such as New Hampshire and Maine. Our guide to metal building snow loads explains why.
Common Uses
Pre-engineered buildings work for almost any purpose. For example, owners use them for garages, workshops, barns, riding arenas, warehouses, retail spaces and churches. Because you can customize the design, the same system works for a small garage or a large commercial facility.
We supply pre-engineered steel building kits nationwide and offer installation in select regions. Explore our metal buildings page to see what we offer.
